The Junior Miners Forum of South Africa (JMFSA) is a Not-for-Profit mining peer-to-peer organisation established to serve as a collective voice and representative platform for South Africa’s diverse junior mining ecosystem.
The Forum brings together stakeholders across the junior mining value chain — from artisanal miners, prospectors and explorers to small-scale producers, emerging mining companies, communities, mineral-rights holders, shareholders and participants in mid-tier and large-scale mining companies.

JMFSA exists to advance the interests, participation and development of junior miners by identifying and addressing the structural, regulatory, financial, technical, commercial and market-access barriers that continue to constrain the growth of the sector. We believe that South Africa’s junior mining sector has the potential to become one of the country’s most important engines of entrepreneurship, employment creation, economic participation, local development, beneficiation and transformation. Our role is to help unlock that potential.

What We Do

The junior mining sector has historically faced a range of interconnected barriers. JMFSA seeks to bring these challenges into one coordinated platform and work with the relevant stakeholders to develop solutions.
Our advocacy agenda will focus on key areas including:

Access to Funding

Advocating for funding models suited to junior mining's risk profile, including exploration funding, development finance, working capital, equipment finance, project finance, processing/beneficiation finance, infrastructure finance and investment partnerships.

Regulatory Reform

Engaging policymakers and regulators on legislation, regulations and administrative processes that create unintended barriers, promoting an environment that is efficient, transparent, predictable and appropriate to junior mining's scale.

Access to Mineral Rights

Helping stakeholders navigate the mineral-rights environment and advocating for transparent, efficient processes for viable projects.

Access to Equipment & Technology

Promoting access to modern, affordable, appropriate mining equipment and technology, particularly for companies with resources but limited capital.

Market Access

Helping junior miners move beyond production to secure sustainable markets — connecting them with offtakers, processors, traders, domestic industrial users, export markets, logistics providers and strategic commercial partners.

Processing & Beneficiation

Promoting greater participation in processing, beneficiation and value addition, so more value is retained within South Africa.

About Us

The origins of the Junior Miners Forum trace back to the Mining Charter III consultation process, where like-minded stakeholders in the junior mining industry began collaborating around common challenges, opportunities and initiatives.

Despite differences in commodities, geography, business models and stage of development, these early engagements showed that junior mining stakeholders shared many of the same obstacles, including:
